Our doctorates

We award three different types of doctoral degrees—the PhD, five professional doctorates in education, health and music, and Higher Doctorates.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is a fully research-focused degree, available across all the research areas of the University, as long as appropriate supervision and resourcing are available. This degree takes a minimum of 36 months of full-time study to complete.

For your PhD, you'll carry out original and sustained research, mentored by an academic supervisor. You’ll then present the outcomes of your research in a substantial written thesis.

Professional doctorates

Professional doctorates are available for emerging leaders in the education, health, and music sectors. The Health and Education doctorates are restricted to New Zealand citizens or permanent residents, and build on a significant period of professional practice. The Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) requires you to have substantial performance or composition experience.

Doctor of Education not currently open

The Doctor of Education (EdD) programme is not currently accepting new applications.

This intake pause does not apply to the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Education.

Higher Doctorates

A Higher Doctorate is awarded for a substantial body of published work that indicates excellence and distinguished leadership and that provides an original and prestigious contribution to the relevant field.

Applicants submit a portfolio of work for initial consideration, followed by an examination process.
