Graduate ready for a career in statistics

Employers need more people to analyse and make sense of the huge amount of data they can generate today.

Our Master of Applied Statistics (MAppStat) gives you the practical skills you need to start a career.

This Master's degree gives you coursework and practical training. You’ll learn a range of advanced techniques, and be introduced to the work of professional statisticians and consultants.

Who can study for this qualification

You can study for an MAppStat if you have a Bachelor’s degree with at least a B average in a relevant subject.

Another way is if you have a lot of practical or professional experience, or a qualification in a different area. Contact the relevant head of school to talk about your options.

What you’ll learn

During your study, you’ll:

  • develop expertise in research and analytics
  • practice real client communication and develop consultancy skills
  • apply your skills in a work experience practicum in a relevant government department or business
  • work with other students in a consulting role with real clients such as clinicians or academics
  • complete an oral presentation and write a report
  • gain a toolbox of skills so you can solve real-life problems.

You might also intern with Stats NZ, Department of Conservation, Wellington City Council, Earth Sciences New Zealand, or data science companies in the private sector.

    How you’ll study

You’ll take three core courses that cover methodology, statistical consulting, and a practicum. You’ll then take further approved courses worth 120 points, one of which is a research course.

If you complete only the coursework you may be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in Science in Statistics.

Studying full time, you’ll complete the MAppStat in 12 months.

    Part-time study

Studying part time, you can complete the MAppStat over a maximum of 3 years.

    Qualification support and advice

We can help you match your interests and career goals with the right course of study.
