Deepen your understanding of Environmental Studies

The Postgraduate Diploma in Environmental Studies will deepen your understanding of the social dimensions of environmental issues. You'll build the critical thinking and engagement skills needed to tackle today's most pressing environmental challenges.

You'll explore how environmental decisions are made and contested, drawing on psychology, law, political ecology, environmental ethics, and mātauranga Māori. Case studies from around the world bring these ideas to life.

The Diploma is a standalone qualification—but it also sets you up well for further study. If you want to go further, you can continue into a Master's by adding a year of research.

Who can study for this qualification

You need a Bachelor’s degree with at least a B average to get into the PGDipEnvStud. Your degree can be in a relevant science, commerce, or humanities subject. Environmental Studies pairs well with:

  • Geography and Development Studies
  • Māori Studies
  • Public Policy
  • Law
  • Management.

The PGDipEnvStud will suit you if you want to:

  • take some postgraduate courses to specialise in a subject area relevant to your past study
  • build on your skills and knowledge from working in the industry with study at a postgraduate level
  • prepare for a Master’s degree.

What you’ll learn

In your core courses you’ll critically explore environmental decision making and engagement and study research methods. Courses cover research design, data collection and analysis, working with communities, and how to communicate research findings.

Further Environmental Studies courses

You’ll also select some further Environmental Studies courses. These courses cover a range of critical approaches to environmental issues, incorporating psychology, law, political ecology, environmental ethics, and mātauranga Māori. You’ll explore diverse case studies and contexts from around the world.

Electives

The remaining points in your PGDipEnvStud can be made up of 400- or 500-level courses from across the University. Talk to the postgraduate coordinator about what courses might align with your interests and ambitions.

How you’ll study

The PGDipEnvStud is made up of taught courses that you can complete in one year of full-time study. This is the same as Part 1 of the Master of Environmental Studies.

Part-time study

If you’re a domestic student, you study part time and complete the PGDipEnvStud over four trimesters.

Flexible study options

You can study postgraduate Environmental Studies through one of three qualifications:

  • Master of Environmental Studies (240 points)
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Environmental Studies (120 points)
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Environmental Studies (60 points).

These qualifications are ‘staircased’. If you start with the Diploma or Certificate and want to continue studying after you finish, your completed courses can count towards a higher qualification.

Or, if you enrol in the Master’s but choose not to finish it, you may have completed enough courses to be awarded a Diploma or Certificate.

Choose the qualification that suits your career goals, time constraints, and financial situation.
