Learn a language to enhance your global perspective
Studying a language opens the door to authentic cross-cultural communication. It helps you connect with people on a deeper level by understanding their values, humour, and worldview.
The Diploma in Languages (DipLang) is a flexible, part-time qualification where you can study one or two languages without committing to a full major. Beginner learners are welcome. The DipLang can enhance your Bachelor’s degree and it’s also a recognised qualification on its own.
If you study one language, you’ll reach at least upper intermediate competency. If you study two languages, you’ll reach at least intermediate competency in both. You’ll also gain the tools to continue your learning after your studies are complete. Whether you’re looking to your CV, enhance your professional skills, or follow a personal interest, the DipLang gives you a way to showcase your language proficiency.
Warning for international students
The Diploma in Languages can only be studied part-time, so it may not be suitable for you as an international student. New Zealand Student Visa requirements only allow international students to study full time.
What you’ll learn
If you’re at beginner level when you start the DipLang, you’ll take six language courses in your chosen language or languages. If you have some knowledge of your chosen language, you may be able to begin at a higher level.
You’ll study six courses, each worth 20 points, for your chosen language:
- Chinese
- French
- German
- Japanese
- Samoan
- Spanish
- te reo Māori.
You’ll be assessed through a combination of assignments, quizzes, in-class tests, and presentations.
Build your diploma
If you study only one language and it’s an Asian, Latin American, or European language, you’ll need to take LANG 301—Languages and Cultures for Global Communication. This course addresses common issues related to language learning and advances your language skills.
You don’t need to take LANG 301 if you're taking two languages, or if you choose to study Samoan or Te Reo Māori.
Study over four trimesters
The DipLang can only be studied part time, over at least four trimesters, which is 18 months. Depending on your courses, your study may take longer.
You’ll study three courses each worth 20 points.
