Film (Bachelor of Arts)
Why Wellington
Make the most of our decades of scholarship and study in Film, which we’ve been offering since 1991. Our Film programme is the oldest, largest, and top-ranked in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Wellington is the home of Aotearoa New Zealand’s film industry and was named as a UNESCO City of Film in 2019. Wētā FX, Park Road Post Production, and 600 other film related companies are all in Wellington. The city also hosts Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision, Archives New Zealand, National Library of New Zealand, and a thriving film culture scene.
Choose your study path
You can take Film as a major or minor in a Bachelor of Arts.
Film students can combine their major with other subjects such as Media Studies, Communication, Theatre, English Literature, Design, or Marketing to expand their career opportunities.
You may also choose to study a conjoint degree, such as a Bachelor of Arts with a Bachelor of Laws.
Learn critical and creative approaches to film
A BA major in Film lets you explore the aesthetic, cultural, historical, industrial, practical, and technological dimensions of cinema.
Our 100-level courses introduce you to the different practices of film interpretation, as well as the history and diversity of cinema. Our advanced courses involve the detailed study of Aotearoa New Zealand, Hollywood, South American, East Asian cinema, as well as women’s and queer cinema. We also teach courses on specific genres, film production, film’s relationship to other media, and cinema’s industrial and institutional contexts.
In the course of your studies, you will have the option of producing critical work informed by scholarship in the field of film studies, communicate critical ideas through creative research such as video essays, and produce short fiction or documentary films.
Learn film production
You can also learn about the craft of filmmaking in one of our limited-entry production courses in film and documentary offered in your second and third years.

Future careers
A pathway to move into many roles in the film sector is to start out in administrative roles, as an intern, or crew assistant. Many Film graduates are already experienced in producing and making their own films and have a portfolio of paid and voluntary roles.
Your practical filmmaking experience combined with a postgraduate or industry qualification can lead to more senior roles in production and distribution.
