Think critically about money
Study how individuals and organisations make decisions about money.
Finance is closely aligned with Economics at Victoria University of Wellington, and many students choose to study these subjects together. This will help you understand why people do the things they do, including the reasons why they invest.
Finance is a fast-paced and challenging field that rewards curiosity, analytical thinking, and confidence with numbers. If you’re interested in how businesses and markets operate, Finance offers a rewarding path of study.
What you'll learn
You'll learn about two key areas of finance: investment and corporate finance.
Investment is about how people and organisations decide where to put their money—like in shares, bonds, or other assets. It’s about finding the right balance between risk and reward to reach your financial goals.
Corporate finance examines how firms raise and manage capital, make investment decisions, and create value for shareholders.
Together, these areas help explain how financial markets operate and how financial decisions shape business performance and the wider economy.
Why Wellington
Wellington is the administrative and financial centre of New Zealand. Take advantage of the University's connections with government agencies such as the Treasury and the Reserve Bank, and many other private sector institutions and professional bodies.
Choose your study path
You’ll study Finance in the Bachelor of Commerce.
You can take a double major and combine Finance with another Commerce major. Finance is commonly studied alongside Economics or Accounting. It also goes well with other subjects like Law and social sciences.
You could also study Finance in a conjoint degree. For example, a BCom combined with a BA, BSc or LLB. A conjoint degree means you can combine Finance with arts, science and other degree majors. For example, Finance with Psychological Science.
