Discover the roots of the English language

Gain the skills to read, translate and interpret texts in ancient Greek and learn how to unpack the writings of challenging authors like Homer, Euripides, Plato, and Thucydides. Greek literature is rich and expressive.

By reading the works in the original language that they were written in, you'll gain a deeper understanding and better appreciation for that literature. Improve your confidence in written and spoken communication. Enrich your vocabulary and learn to express your ideas more clearly.

If you want to delve deeper into the oldest literature in Europe and find out more about the beginnings of our language, politics, and culture, then studying Greek is a good option for you.

Visit our Classics Museum—Te Whare Taonga o te Puāwaitanga

The Classics Museum is a collection of antiquities—mostly Greek and Roman—including terracotta vases and other objects used in daily life, including a sizeable collection of coins.

Objects from the collection are brought out of the cases for you to learn, and the Curator often hosts visits from school groups and other learners. The Museum is also equipped as a teaching space, and many Classics undergraduate tutorials and Honours seminars are held there.
