Turn your love of writing into a career
Combine your love of literature and writing with the communications profession. Develop skills in writing clearly, persuasively, and imaginatively for a career in the creative sector.
You’ll develop your ability to respond to issues affecting individuals, communities, and the planet, and understand the literary traditions, artistic texts, and transformative potential of Aotearoa New Zealand texts.
You’ll analyse texts as example of literary modes, forms, and genres. Learn to write for different audiences in print and digital media, by using the right registers for personal, professional, and public writing. Throughout, you’ll be mentored by recognised writers. We'll teach you through workshops that develop practical communication skills you need for a rewarding creative sector career.
Choose your study path
At undergraduate level, you can study Literary and Creative Communication as a major, minor, or elective in either a Bachelor of Communication or a Bachelor of Arts.
Bachelor of Communication (BC)
The BC is a three-year, 360-point degree focused on communication and creative practice.
For the Literary and Creative Communication major, you’ll need to:
- take two required first-year courses: The Art of Writing and Reading and Writing Poetry
- choose elective courses in your second and third years
- complete a complementary major or minor, if you choose one.
Your complementary major or minor must be in a subject related to Literary and Creative Communication. Talk to the School’s student adviser for advice on your options.
Bachelor of Arts (BA)
The BA is also a three-year, 360-point degree, but it offers more flexibility in what you study. It’s a good choice if you want a broader education and the opportunity to explore other subjects that could expand your career options.
For the Literary and Creative Communication major, you’ll need to:
- take the same required courses and electives as the BC major
- choose your accompanying major or minor from a wider range of subjects, if applicable.
Develop your writing skills in coursework and workshops
Literary and Creative Communication gives you the chance to practise creative writing in open-entry courses in your first year of study. Your courses include substantial time in a workshop environment, which gives you structure and support for your writing, editing, and peer reviewing.
You’ll then have the chance to further develop your writing skills later in the degree.
