Physical science drives technology
Physics powers the tech industries transforming New Zealand’s economy. It’s essential for solving problems in quantum technologies, data analytics, and launching satellites.
Explore physical phenomena through hands-on experiments and learn to use industry-standard scientific equipment. Discover theoretical models that fuel innovation, learn how next-generation solar panels are made, and how to accurately model climate change.
You’ll also be able to visit labs and participate in the research of world-leading specialists. You'll develop skills in computer programming, software modelling, and data visualisation.

Learn through teamwork
Modern physics is all about working as a team—and our approach to teaching reflects this. While you study, you’ll get support from teaching staff and other students.
Physics at Wellington has a whānau approach. It’s safe to make mistakes as you’re learning, where you know the staff and the staff know you.
Choose your study path
You can major in Physics in the Bachelor of Science (BSc).
You can study it alongside another subject within the BSc, either by studying Physics as a minor, or studying a double major. For example you could major in Chemistry and take Physics as your minor, or you could do a double major between Physics and Space Science.
You can also do a conjoint degree to combine your Bachelor of Science with another degree, such as the Bachelor of Engineering or the Bachelor of Arts.
The BSc page explains your options and how you can structure your study. Our flexible study page defines double majors and conjoint degrees and offers a list of subjects you can combine when you study.
