Learn how tax shapes business and society

By studying Taxation you’ll gain the skills to help organisations make smart decisions about tax. It’s a good choice if you enjoy numbers, like to solve detailed problems, and are interested in how tax affects businesses, individuals, and the economy.

You’ll gain expertise in Aotearoa New Zealand's tax system, and learn how taxation shapes business decisions and government revenue. You'll also develop analytical skills and practical abilities in tax compliance and planning.

Taxation skills boost your career prospects in fields like finance, accountancy, and management.

Choose your study path

You can study Taxation as your major, or as a minor, within the three-year Bachelor of Commerce (BCom).

Taxation works best when you combine it with another major. Pairing it with a subject like Accounting, Finance, or Management gives you more career options and helps you move into a wider range of roles.

Our BCom gives you many ways to structure your study and to combine Taxation with other subjects.

Future careers

There’s always a demand among companies and public sector organisations for graduates with knowledge of taxation.

Taxation isn’t tied to one specific job, but paired with Accounting, Finance, or Management, it can help you find roles in many industries.

Graduates with taxation in their degrees often find work in organisations like:

  • the ‘Big Four’ accounting firms (PwC, Deloitte, EY, KPMG)
  • specialist tax advisory practices
  • corporate finance teams within large corporations
  • government agencies like Inland Revenue and The Treasury for policy development and revenue administration roles.
