Learn Mathematics as a way of thinking

Mathematics at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University goes beyond numbers and calculators. Everything you see and do, any kind of reasoning or pattern, has a mathematical aspect to it.

Mathematics explores both practical skills and how to apply them. Learn to think clearly and independently, solve problems, and communicate your answers.

A degree in Mathematics suits you if you have precise and systematic thinking. You can study what interests you—that might be pure mathematics, like algebra, calculus, graph theory, analysis, logic, or combinatorics. Or it might be applied mathematics, where the skills you learn are targeted directly at real-life issues, from engineering to earthquakes.

Choose your study path

You can study Mathematics as the major subject or minor subject of a Bachelor of Science (BSc) or a Bachelor of Arts (BA). Which you choose depends on the flexibility you want in your studies, and the other courses you want to take.

If you major or minor in Mathematics, you can also choose to study courses in different areas, like analysis, discrete mathematics, or applied mathematics.

The School of Mathematics and Statistics has a range of example pathways to show how this might look.
