He mihi
Be part of te reo Māori revival and revitalisation
Learn how to communicate in te reo Māori—written and oral—and analyse how the language is used. Engage in basic conversations on everyday topics to develop your confidence in speaking and listening to the language.
You’ll study the political and social aspects of language revitalisation and gain a deep understanding of the linguistic aspects of the language.
If you're interested in becoming a fluent speaker and promoting the language as an everyday form of communication, then Te Reo Māori is right for you.
Be immersed in kaupapa Māori while you study
Our facilities are based on sustainability practice, tikanga Māori, and Maori teaching styles, all integrated with our marae wharenui at our back door.
Ngā Mokopuna is our purpose-built teaching and learning space. It brings together mātauranga Māori and Western science innovations, including renewable energy and climate change transition technologies. It incorporates our offices, student study areas, and teaching spaces. The first floor features the marae kitchen and dining area.
We’ve been a pioneer in Māori study and scholarship for decades. We first offered Te Reo Māori and Māori Studies in the 1960s, and in 1980 we became the first university in Aotearoa to establish a marae on campus. Our wharenui—Te Tumu Herenga Waka—opened in December 1986.

Choose your study path
There are three ways you can study Te Reo Māori with us.
Bachelor of Arts
You can study Te Reo Māori in a Diploma in Languages in a three-year Bachelor of Arts (BA) or as your major or minor subject. You can also study Te Reo Māori as the language component of a Pacific Studies major.
Many students broaden their expertise by pairing Te Reo Māori as a double major with subjects such as Anthropology, History, and Political Science.
If you’re studying for a double degree or conjoint degree, Te Reo Māori goes well with Commerce, Law, or Teaching.
Our BA gives you many ways to structure your study and to combine Māori Studies with other subjects.
Short language qualifications
If you’d like to study a language without committing to a full major, a short qualification could be a good fit.
Certificate in Languages (CertLang)
The 60-point CertLang is a flexible, part-time qualification for anyone keen to add a language to their studies. It’s a great way to complement a Bachelor’s degree.
Diploma in Languages (DipLang)
The 120-point DipLang lets you go a step further, studying one or more languages part time—either broadening your range or building one language to a more advanced level. It can complement a Bachelor’s degree or stand alone as a qualification in its own right.

If you want to study with us, but need more skills
The Tohu Māoritanga is a one-year, full-time qualification all about developing your cultural capacity and study skills. It’s a pre-degree designed for people who want to study at university.
The Tohu Māoritanga introduces you to the University space through kaupapa Māori to help you understand both worlds. You don't need to have University Entrance to study for this diploma or be Māori—you just need to be at least 16 years old. Mature students and people wanting to upskill are also welcome.
