How globalisation affects our world

The Globalisation, Movement and Change minor treats globalisation as a complex, contested phenomenon: how its forces interact to shape our world, who gains and loses from it, and why.

The minor draws on many areas to examine how globalisation evolves, and how forces like capitalism and inequality drive it forward. Migration and diaspora—including across Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa (the Pacific Ocean)—are central to that story. You’ll compare human movements and migration throughout history, explore how states control who can move or settle, and how immigrants, refugees, and other groups claim their rights.

Develop skills in analysing, interpreting, and debating the key issues about how global forces play out in specific communities, and how people and communities respond.

Choose your study path

The Globalisation, Movement, and Change minor is unique to the Bachelor of Global Studies (BGS). It’s one of eight BGS minors.

The courses within this minor span disciplines like anthropology, political science, geography, international relations. This flexibility lets you follow your interests while linking courses into a coherent body of knowledge.

You might learn:

  • how capitalism shapes, and is shaped by, culture and how it produces inequalities
  • different theories and approaches to development from around the world
  • how New Zealand engages the world through its foreign and defence policies
  • the movement of peoples across the Pacific Ocean and around the world, and how migration continues to shape cultures and communities today.

See 'degree and subject requirements' for your course options.

Choose your second minor

You must take at least two minors in your BGS. The Cultures and Identities minor pairs naturally with:

These are just suggestions—you're free to pair this minor with any of the others.

The BGS is different from other degrees

For most degrees, you need to choose a major subject. But with the Bachelor of Global Studies, you’ll choose at least two minor subjects.

In the BGS, you complete:

  • four interdisciplinary core courses
  • a Māori Studies course
  • a skills and concepts course
  • three courses from a language offered by the University
  • at least two of the eight available minor subjects.

You can also add a third BGS minor, a minor in your chosen language, or a minor from anywhere else in the University.

We help you design your BGS around your study goals and interests. This flexible degree also includes career development and direct professional experience.
